Baking Soda – or Bicarbonate of soda – is a hugely versatile substance. In fact, it has been used for centuries for a variety of purposes, including as a soap and body cleanser, in cooking, and as toothpaste. The great thing about Baking Soda is that it is eco-friendly, non-toxic and very cheap to purchase from the supermarket.

The versatility of Baking Soda makes it an ideal topic for hundreds of books, articles and online blog posts, and there are always new ways to use it being discovered. But, no book or article can possibly cover everything, and so we present ten more hacks for Baking Soda and prove why it must be in your shopping list. Note them down because they’ll be useful around the home each and every day!

Remove Crayon

To start us off, here’s a Baking Soda hack that all parents can relate to! Your cute little toddler just wants to play and make their mark on the world, but with a fistful of greasy crayons, they are deadly around the home! The next time you’re admiring the artwork of your precious one on the kitchen wall, just grab some warm water, add a few spoons of Baking Soda, and mix it into a paste. That crayon will come right off when you apply some of this wonder paste with a dampened rag or cloth!

Soak your Dirty Laundry

Here’s a good one for all of those dirty stains on clothes. Just add a cup of Baking Soda to a tub of water and soak your clothes in in before washing in the machine. The Baking Soda will help to loosen up those dirty little stain particles.

Cleaning Tiles

You don’t need harsh chemicals to clean your bathroom or laundry tiles. Make a nice paste with a cup of Baking Soda and some water, and then spread it all over your tiles. Leave it for about ten minutes and then scrub the dirt right off with a stiff brush.

Fresh Smells

Have you ever encountered that musty smell coming from a wardrobe full of clothes, a kitchen cupboard or your refrigerator? Just put a cup of Baking Soda into a porous bag like a sock or a pantyhose and place it in those smelly areas. You’ll find that the Baking Soda absorbs the bad smells and leaves the area fresh.

Clean a Hair Brush

One of the worst things about hair brushes is that they get all oily and greasy over time. If you first remove the hairs and then place the brush in a tub of water and two tablespoons of Baking Soda, all of the oil and grease will start to loosen and come off.

Cleaning Dishes

If you’ve been wondering whether Baking Soda can help you to clean those piled up dirty dishes, you’re in luck! Just rub some Baking Soda on those ultra-greasy dishes and then rinse with warm water. You’ll find that the grease just slides off.

Coffee Cups

We all love a brew now and then, but the brown stains from tea and coffee can become unsightly at the bottom of your cup, and can even cause a bitter taste if not washed thoroughly. If you wash your cups, and even your coffee maker and tea pot, in warm water and a quarter of a cup of Baking Soda, those stains will loosen right up. You can even leave them to soak overnight and then wash as normal the next morning.

Clean The Kitchen Sink

We wash dirty dishes in our sinks all the time, and the sink can become stained and dirty. If you want to keep a clean sink, just sprinkle Banking Soda over the wet surface and then rub and scrub it with a toothbrush, stiff brush or sponge. When you rinse afterwards, you’ll have a sparkling sink!

Cleaner Hair

Remember that nice clean hair brush after applying Baking Soda? Well, did you know that you can also add a pinch of Baking Soda to your shampoo before washing? Just like the hair brush, the Baking Soda will help to lift out all of the accumulated oils and grease on your scalp and in your hair.

For Tired Feet

At the end of a long day of cleaning with Baking Soda, you can even add this wonder substance to some warm water and soak your aching feet in it! Just add about four tablespoons to a small tub of warm water and then soak those tired feet! You can scrub afterwards and get rid of all the dead skin.
