Like all prepackaged foods, commercial pet treats often contain unhealthy additives to extend their shelf life. If you want to ensure your pets receive a delicious and nutritious treat, the best option is to make your own. Add everything you’ll need to your shopping list by checking out the following recipes.

For Dogs: Frozen Peanut Butter

Melt a cup of peanut butter in the microwave and then add 32 ounces of plain yogurt (make sure it has no added sugar). Spoon the mixture into cupcake liners and put them in the freezer. Help your dog cool down with a treat on a hot day or after exercise.

For Cats: Tuna Cookies

Knead five ounces of tuna, half a cup of cornmeal, half a cup of flour, and half a cup of water into a ball. Break the ball into cookie-size pieces and lay on a baking sheet. Cook in the oven at 350 degrees — your treats will be ready in just five minutes.

For Budgies: Cuttlebone Treat

A cuttlebone can form the base for a tasty treat for your budgies. Mix together a spoonful of honey, spoonful of peanut butter, and spoonful of seeds. Spread the paste over a cuttlebone and put in the freezer for a few hours. Once the treat is solid, thaw it for a few minutes before offering it to your birds.

For Horses: Apple and Carrot Cakes

Grate a carrot and an apple into a bowl. Add one cup of molasses, two cups of oats, and two tablespoons of vegetable oil. Mix everything together well and pour onto a baking tray. Bake at 300 degrees for around 40 minutes or until the cake turns golden. Cool and slice into smaller squares before feeding to your horse.

For Hamsters: Banana Meal

Mash up a quarter of a banana with a teaspoon of honey and a tablespoon of chopped pear. Offer to your hamster as a treat, separate from his regular food.

For Rabbits: Carrot Cookies

Combine half a cup of oats, half a cup of flour, and half a cup of finely-grated carrot. Add a quarter cup of water and stir until smooth. Create small balls from the mixture, placing each on a baking tray. Cook for 15 minutes at 350 degrees. Your rabbit can have one or two treats per day — keep the rest fresh in the refrigerator.

Making an extra effort to prepare delicious homemade treats will develop the bond between you and your pet. Before you go shopping, add the ingredients you’ll need to your grocery list.
