Since my wife and I want to use this. (And it’s great so far.) I’d prefer labels. I don’t go shopping at the store often enough to remember what color a certain aisle is, but I can sure read the sign that says, “Dairy.”

To be more precise:
a) For singles: To remember (this is what a shopping list app usually is for, right?)
b) For shared lists: To allow others to understand what green stands for
c) For color blind people: To use the grouping feature at all

Color coding is fine. However, while choosing a color it could become difficult to remind to what department/aisle the color stands for. This gets to a bigger problem if the list is shared to other family members.

Therefore it would be a good help if the user can “optionally” assign text labels to the colors for the color picker. This this case the user would see the department name during the assignment of a color assigned to an article.
Since the shopping list is already sorted by color, there is no need to have the name of the department/aisle displayed there.
